From Richard Bammer's (The Reporter newspaper, Vacaville, Calif.) review of the 31st Annual Vacaville Art League Juried Art Show:

"First place went to Michael Fitzwater of Sacramento for his 8-by-13-inch black-and-white photo of a barnacle-covered wharf piling, "Stands Alone." His vertical photo suggests a loneliness, the unpredictable shocks that time brings to anything, living or not, and, possibly, the metaphysical space where, literally in this work, a manmade object meets nature. But we see it filtered, as a sublime lyric, through Fitzwater's sensibility."
